Top Ten Books That Feature Animals as the Main Characters

This weeks feature is Top Ten Books Which Feature Characters Who _____ I actually had a hard time coming up with a theme for this one.  I tried to think of books that I read that have the same kind of themes while also being unique.  At first, I was going to modify the prompt and go with top time travel/parallel universe books but I couldn't even think of ten that I've read even though I know I have.  I just had a hard time brainstorming so then I came up with books that use animals as the main characters.

There are other books out there that feature animals as the main characters either as told from the animals point of view or as support to a human character but for the sake of this post, I only stuck to books that I have read and loved.

Top Three Recommended// Moduc, The Story of Edgar Sawtelle & His Dark Materials Trilogy

Have you read any of these?

  1. Ahh Charlotte's Web, I think it was one of the first books that really had me exploring animals as characters in a story. I really should re-read it again.

    1. Honestly, I remember liking it but I read it several years ago so I can't really speak to much of the plot of anything. Not a fan?

  3. aw! I just reread "Animal Farm"- so dang good and well written. Charlotte's Web was my fave book growing up and will always have a special place in my heart.

I only saw the 'Life of Pi' movie but it was so riveting that I'm sure it deserves a read!

    1. Animal Farm is so good. I remember it as one of the few books that I enjoyed that was required reading for HS English.

  4. The Art of Racing in the Rain is one of the best books I ever read. My list was the top 10 books with characters with 4 legs so we were kind of on the same wavelength. Great list. I wished I had thought to include Enzo on mine :(

  6. I wasn't really into animal books as a kid unless they were about horses, but I did love Narnia and Charlotte's Web. I also confess to reading a few Redwall titles! I haven't read Art of Racing in the Rain, but it is on my to-read list. I loved Animal Farm when I read it in high school.

    1. I would like to read some of Redwall and Watership Down. When I was younger, I used to think those books were dumb but my tastes have changed and I've grown wiser in my old age ;-)

    2. I get the appeal of animal books, I do! I never thought they were dumb, just not my thing. Nevertheless, I do love a lot if books that animals figure prominently in (Forgotten Beasts of Eld, anything by Robin McKinley, etc) :)

  7. I love Charlotte's Web and The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe. Great idea for a list! Have you ready Black Beauty? If you haven't then you should, it's a lovely book with an animal narrator.

  9. I actually haven't read a lot of these - my favourite 'animal' books were Dewey the library cat and Cleo (about a cat as well). But, lots of tears lol.
